What is the historical background of Lindy Hop and Solo Jazz?

Lindy Hop and other African American
Vernacular Jazz dances are African American art forms associated with the cultural values and aesthetics of
Black American culture. Jazz dancing, rooted in the African American culture, is telling the story of people who
survived despite oppressions still affecting them to this day (Collective Voices for Change (CVFC), 2022). It is
important to us to consciously reflect on and appreciate this cultural background. If you need more information,
feel free to contact us. A recommended resource is the Instagram channel @blackdancehistory.

What should I wear?

There is no specific dress code—what matters is that you feel comfortable in your clothing. Since the floor can be slippery, many people wear sneakers for dancing. Lindy Hop and Solo Jazz are energetic dances, so you might work up a sweat. For this reason, good hygiene is important. We recommend bringing a change of T-shirt. There is also a “Freshen Up” station in the studio with deodorant and chewing gum that you are welcome to use.

Where does the class take place?

Our space is located at Militärstrasse 84 in Zurich, behind the blue door next to the elevator on the first floor. You can leave your belongings in the kitchen or, if you have a class there, in the small room.

Are there showers or changing rooms?

Please note that there are no showers or changing rooms. However, there are two gender-neutral toilets in the hallway.

What about refunds?

If you can no longer attend the course or Workshop due to health reasons, we will refund the amount upon receipt of a doctor’s certificate.

Can I sign up without a partner?

Yes! In Lindy Hop, we regularly switch partners, so individual sign-ups are absolutely fine. Solo Jazz is a solo dance, so no partner is needed.

Which role will I dance?

In the first classes as well as in the “Lindy in a Day” workshop, we dance without fixed roles (Leader/Follower), so you can try out both roles and decide which one you prefer. In our ELEF courses (Everybody Leads Everybody Follows), you will learn both roles.

What are Social Dances?

Lindy Hop and Solo Jazz thrive on social dances. These events offer a great opportunity to meet new people, dance, chat, and learn. There are many opportunities for social dancing in Zurich, including every second Friday at our studio. All are welcome, including beginners. You will be automatically signed up for the next course period unless you unsubscribe. At the end of the course period, you will receive an email with an option to unsubscribe. If you don’t want to continue, make sure to unsubscribe in time. If you can’t attend a class, we would appreciate a short message to let us know, but this is not mandatory.

What happens if there is an imbalance in roles (Leader/Follower)?

If there is an imbalance between Leaders and Followers in a non-ELEF* class due to absences, we implement what we call Leader or Follower Stations. In these, you switch roles and dance both roles before returning to your preferred one. You can also choose to dance an entire class in the other role if you’d like to give it a try. *ELEF: Everybody leads everybody follows

Do I get videos of what I've learned?

Yes, each course has its own WhatsApp group. There, we share recap videos of the class content, and you can communicate with others. Participation is voluntary. If you don’t use WhatsApp, you can also record the video yourself with your phone.

What should I do if I feel I'm in the wrong class?

Please speak to the instructors. If possible, you can switch to a course that better matches your level.
